Rick Warren and The Lie That Pleases

T-NC has a post up on Rick Warren, the Purpose Driven Life guy and the man who will give the invocation at the inaugural.

The contradictions and lies that he and the rest of the Christianists tell (Huckabee, I’m talking to you) about marriage being a constant through the centuries have been gone over enough. Yes, they are pleasing to their followers and will keep the awful gay wolves at bay. But here’s the part that comforts me:

These guys are on the wrong side of history. It is just a matter of time, I believe. The true tradition of America is expanding rights and it will swallow up these bigots sooner rather than later. The only threat to my marriage is my own stupidity, not whether the guys next door are playing hide the salami, raising kids, and being better dressed than me.

Patience everyone, patience. The best way to correct a liar is to let him talk in front of as many people as possible.

I’m annoyed about the pick, but I’ve preached the same message about letting (liars, idiots, take your pick) expose themselves by their own words in other contexts. Thanks for reminding me.
